Sexual Reproduction

Sexual reproduction is one of the 2 topics we learnt in term 3, the other being optics. It is a rather awkward topic, as it involves the study of reproduction>.<

Firstly, sexual reproduction is the biological process of forming a new individual through the fusion of two special cells known as gametes. (the fusion process is called fertiization) The larger of the gametes is known as the egg wheras the smaller one is the sperm.

The male repro system:

  • Testis: production of sperm and testosterones
  • Epididymis: storage of sperms temporarily, contract to ejaculate sperms
  • Glands (seminal vesicles, prostate gland, Cowper's glands) : to produce seminal fluid  , nourish sperms, activates sperms movement.
  • penis : inserted into vagina when erected
The female reproductive system:

  • ovary:  production of female gametes and release of mature ovum
  • oviduct: delivers mature ovum to the uterus, beating of cilia to move ovum along oviduct, muscular strong contractions
  • uterus: muscular and elastic to push the foetus out during birth.
  • endometrium: soft and smooth to prepare for implantation fertilised egg
Menstrual cycle

We also learnt about the menstrual cycle, which is the term for the psychological changes that can occur in fertile women for the purposes of sexual reproduction and fertilization. The average of each cycle is around 28 days, and is under the control of hormones (progesterone and oestrogen) It comprises of the Follicular phrase (beginning of cycle, marked by bleeding that persists up to day 7 where the uterine lining is at its thinnest), Ovulation (triggering of the release of mature ovum from ovary) and Luteal Phase ( growth in more blood capillaries, thickness of uterine lining reaches maximum)

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDS)

We laernt about Gonorrhea, Syphilis and AIDS, their ways of transmittion, symptoms, effects and treatment, Have a look at Syphillis:

It is transmitted through sexual intercourse, from an infected mother to baby during birth, the sharing of injection needles with infected people, and transfusion of infected blood.

It will cause painless sores on the penis vagina cervix or mouth. It will also cause non-itchy skin rashes, leading in deformed joints, paralysis, insanity, death, or even leading to the newborn being deaf of with abnormal teeth and bone.

Birth Control

Also, we learnt about birth control. There are many options of birth control, and one of them is by using a condom, which is temporary. It is a rubber sheath put onto the penis during sexual intercourse and it prevents the sperms from entering the vagina by collecting them nside the condom. There is a 99.99% chance of preventing pregnancy, though microcopic tears could lead to sperms leaking through.

Reflections

I feel that this is a rather difficult topic because it covers many things. It is a vast topic and it requires much work in order to memorize everything, especially the terms for the genitial parts. The class was rather immature when learning this topic as many of them made jokes and such during the process. This hindered our process of learning and we were not able to go through birth control well. Thus we had to self study. I definitely hope that the class can be more cooperative and mature in the future.....
